If Venezuela is refusing to devalue its currency in the face of lower oil prices than the best I can do to get a taste of their cuisine before the country files for bankruptcy is to hit up yum fast casual joints like Guasaca in Raleigh.
Perhaps if the countries balanced budget was dependent on arepa sales instead of oil trading at close to $120 a barrel, I'd have a rosier outlook for our South American friends.
Onto Guasaca, the prices are cheap, the toppings are delicious and the place is super-efficient. Essentially, it is Venezuelan eats in a fast-casual Chipotle-esque setting. You will swear you are at a franchise -restaurant but from what I understand this is the sole location.
This isn't surprising and I'm calling it now, but I believe the Chipotle-ization of eating out is the next big trend for folks looking for quality meals on a budget that they can customize to their liking. I'll go one step further and say that a concept like Guasaca can be a national chain given the hole in that genre across the US. I don't know if the owners are interested, and that is perfectly understandable, but this concept has potential written all over it.
Guasaca reminds me of another fast-casual Chipotle-like company, but with a spin on pizza, called &Pizza (excellent pizza and customization, btw) which looks to be successfully growing its footprint out from Washington DC and now spreading to Maryland and Virginia, I wouldn't be surprised if they are nationwide and a household name in a few years.fa136e57392093479095a5a40f033715
