I'll start with the service we experienced on our only visit so far. Our server seemed to be absent more often that should be expected when every table around us was empty (we were there around 6pm on a Saturday). She was very friendly and knowledgeable but when we were looking for new drinks throughout the evening we had to find her. Kind of disappointing but again it was our only visit so far so it is not necessarily endemic of the restaurant. This could be a good place to note that the web address of this place is "winebar". If you enjoy wine I'd suggest giving something you haven't tried a test. And if you normally are more of a beer person, why not give a suggested wine a try along with something you wouldn't normally eat? You didn't come here for Taco Bell prices and Bud tastes. I was very happy and the server was helpful without being condescending. For dinner I had the Slow Braised Lamb Shank Tagine with Olives, Preserved Lemons, Berber Spiced Couscous and Harissa. You know that moment in your food life when you ate something so perfectly cooked you took your first bite, sat back in your chair and everything around you fell silent because you could only imagine that this moment should never end? That is how I felt. My lamb was so perfectly done it fell apart with no need for a knife. The spiced couscous and harissa were perfectly nice accompaniments. Both very well flavored yet still allowed the lamb to remain the star performer. I did not want it to end. For dessert I had Creme Brulee. It is one of those things that you feel like you could never have enough of. Les Zygomates proved my feeling wrong. The portion was easily twice what I usually make at home in a regular sized ramekin. Of all the terrible things a restaurant could do to food, a large portion is probably not too high on the list. But the thing they did do which does come high on that list was to over torch the sugar top. It was a bit too burned. But the vanilla custard underneath was so perfectly done that I could not have imagined a better way to end this meal. Entrees show true-bistro value and ingenuousness: a beautiful cod en papillote over white beans ($23), a daunting steak-frites ($25) with good aioli for the skinny fries, a rich, spinach-stuffed squash gratin?? ($20), and a heartwarming side of firm, parsley-laden Puy lentils ($7). We adore the accompanying 2005 Aquinas Napa Valley Pinot Noir ($30) for its tart red fruit and emblematic earthy finish. Our solicitous server lets us dawdle over conversation and the 2004 Planeta La Segreta ($30), a Sicilian Nero d'Avola/Merlot/Syrah blend, inky with black currant, black pepper, and overabundant tannins. Desserts include an Amelie-worthy crackling cr??me br??l??e ($8) and a swoony butterscotch ice cream with chocolate sauce and oatmeal tuille ($8). When we finally totter homeward, it's with an unbusted credit limit and a distinctly Gallic sense of joie de vivre.
