Like other reviews have mentioned, I recommend you accept the fact that you must wait for hours to get this delectable food. Bring a chair, an umbrella (especially if you're stuck sitting in the parking lot), water (beer and other tailgating supplies if you're with friends), and a book. Everyone's excited to be there, and no one cuts the line, so despite the early hour, you'll enjoy hanging out with happy people. Plus, the smell starts seeping through the place after a while, and that'll keep you motivated to stay in line.
And if you forgot your line-waiting necessities, fear not. Around 9:30, staff members walk around to sell sodas, water, and beer. They also come around and ask what types and quantities of meat you want, which helps the kitchen determine when to cut off the line (they keep the place open until selling out of food, which happens every day). So come with your order in mind; the menu's available online.

Doors opened at 11:01, and the line moved immediately inside. I was lucky enough to get into the air conditioning by about 11:10, but the line was still so long that I waited an additional 50 minutes before ordering. They slice the meat and ladle out sides right in front of you while making cheery small talk. That's another thing that sets this place apart from others: the staff is exceptional in its customer service.
The food is, as expected, phenomenal. All the meat is tender and doesn't require barbecue sauce, although it's equally yummy. Everyone raves about the brisket, and of course, it's fantastic, but I particularly enjoyed the ribs. They're juicy, meaty, and fall right off the bone.
I've lived in Austin for 5 years, and I avoided this place because it always seemed overrated and too long of a wait, but it's neither. Given the quality, quantity, and deliciousness of the food, the wait only makes it taste all the better.
