I don't know why I consider ausrtins scene a bit intimidating. Am I cool enough? You'll hunt for a parking space and endure the heat or rain - but this "sceney" stand gets cool decor points and a downtown location.
I had the signature sandwich, fried shrimp po boy with a side of cilantro fries. The shrimp were fat and fresh, and lightly breaded, and so delicious that $9 for 4 shrimp on a sandwich it seemed more than fair. The fries were homemade but I expected a little more spices with a name like "cilantro fries". This is restaurant quality food for sure, and it sucked having to eat my po boy while struggling to stay inside the one foot piece of shade as I hugged against the trailor.
But Austin knows capitalism, the old white ships mate cook with white handle bar moustache and hippy grandpa attentiveness suprisingly complemented the young fit agressive Hispanic woman who could have been at practice for the Hawiian womans soccer team as they were suspiciously solicitous. Perhaps this trailer embodies the paradox of Austin claiming to be laid back and hippy when its really spectacular at innovation and marketing itself, and in the process, becoming overcrowded and perhaps cloyingly flashy; it:s is both awesome and annoying.
I'm not sure if this place would warrant it:s own trip, but if youre Downtown and need lunch to go or a snack while youre on vacation - it's a good lunch if you can brave the heat. Most of the time, food trucks just aren't worth the kitsch and added expense. Turf N' Surf is absolutely the exception. The deal is that they offer a variety of turf and surf options, which you can enjoy as either a po' boy or as tacos. Blackened Rainbow Trout ($11) has impeccably fresh fish, served with all the traditional po' boy toppings. It was almost perfect as is, with a little Louisiana hot sauce there's not a whole lot better. Cilantro Fries ($3) are crispy and more than large enough to share; guess everything is, in fact, bigger down here. Service is friendly, and though I can't gauge Austin pricing, by my Chicago standards this was very reasonable for a sandwich containing fresh fish. I'm very impressed I ended up ordering the shrimp salad po boy, which the girl taking my order confirmed was "a good choice". After a few minutes, I was served the sandwich in a sturdy cardboard container, open-faced with the shrimp salad on one side of the bun and the fixins on the other side. The shrimp salad heaped onto the po boy was generous, but it made for a messy experience trying to fold it all up into proper form. Grab extra napkins. And a fork. The po boy was really good though. The shrimp salad had nice, fat chunks of shrimp in it, well cooked to firmness without being chewy. The bun was nice and soft from the outside all the way through, almost croissant-like in the middle.
