A cerca de cem metros do “sarcófago”, um imenso domo de metal que sela a antiga estrutura radioativa, centenas de painéis solares estão sendo instalados e entrarão em funcionamento nas próximas semanas. Após o início da operação, a planta deve gerar um megawatt de energia, o suficiente para abastecer uma pequena cidade com cerca de duas mil residências.</p>

Foram investidos um milhão de euros na construção da estrutura que possui cerca de 3,8 mil painéis fotovoltaicos, que ocupam uma área de 1,6 hectare, cerca de dois campos de futebol. Segundo Yevgen Varyagin, presidente da companhia, a quantidade de sol na região é o “mesmo do sul da Alemanha”. A previsão é que o investimento seja recuperado em sete anos.</p>

Após o desastre, as autoridades soviéticas evacuaram centenas de milhares de pessoas e criaram uma zona de exclusão com dois mil quilômetros quadrados. Os outros reatores continuaram em funcionamento, mas foram desligados no ano 2000.</p>
