La actuación se enmarca dentro de la iniciativa de compensación de emisiones de CO2 de Volkswagen Think Blue. y supondrá la plantación de 4.220 árboles, pertenecientes todos a especies de frondosas autóctonas.<br>
<br>
Los ejemplares que se plantarán y ayudarán a oxigenar la actividad de esta compañía y a reducir su impacto sobre el medio ambiente, proceden de los Packs CO2 Neutral, paquetes opcionales de árboles con los que los propios clientes de la firma pueden neutralizar los primeros 20.000 kilómetros de CO2 que emiten sus vehículos.<br>

Un espacio de la Red Natura 2000<br>

La futura arboleda, la cuarta que Volkswagen planta de la mano de Bosques Sostenibles, se ubicará en un terreno de cinco hectáreas a orillas del embalse del río Ebro. Este se encuentra al sur de la cordillera Cantábrica, en el límite de la región con Burgos, dentro del municipio cántabro de Campoo de Yuso.<br>
<br>
Se trata de un entorno de gran valor paisajístico y de conservación que comprende todo el tramo cántabro del Ebro y sus afluentes de cabecera, que le alimentan en su nacimiento. La zona forma parte de un espacio protegido perteneciente a la Red Europea Natura 2000 y ha sido declarada Refugio Regional de Aves Acuáticas. Cuenta con un centro ornitológico para el estudio y contemplación de las numerosas especies migratorias que hacen escala en el embalse.<br>

Hasta el momento la firma cántabra de gestión ambiental ha plantado para Volkswagen alrededor de 120.000 árboles.<br>

57.000 pinos silvestres, robles, hayas, endrinos, espinos albares y manzanos han permitido repoblar por completo los terrenos de Valdeolea (Cantabria), que en septiembre de 2012 fueron arrasados por un incendio forestal. La reforestación dirigida por Bosques Sostenibles y financiada por Volkswagen acaba de concluir y ha transformado por completo el paisaje de esta zona.<br>
<br>
En el Monte de Cos, también en Cantabria, han sido 23.500 los abedules, hayas, avellanos y castaños que Bosques Sostenibles ha plantado para Volkswagen y que han teñido de verde un pronunciado terreno de 15 hectáreas.<br>
<br>
Estos dos bosques, que fueron los primeros que puso en marcha Volkswagen bajo la tutela de la firma cántabra, han llegado a su máxima capacidad para acoger árboles, por lo que los trabajos de plantación allí se dan por concluidos.<br>
<br>
La firma alemana cuenta además con una cuarta plantación ubicada en Herrera de Pisuerga (Palencia), donde cerca de 35.000 árboles han devuelto a la vida una zona que fue utilizada como vertedero.<br>
<br>
Todas las plantaciones diseñadas y gestionadas por Bosques Sostenibles para Volkswagen se han llevado a cabo en terrenos públicos y tienen como objetivo crear sumideros de carbono que ayuden a mitigar el calentamiento del planeta, así como aumentar la biodiversidad y promover el desarrollo de las áreas rurales.<br>
