Elected. I move that Blue Bonnet Ashe be our chairman." This Was the very opportunity Blue Bonnet wanted for her announcement. She made Debby a profound bow, pushing Amanda out of the way unceremoniously. "I thank you all for this very great honor," she began, clearing her throat in the most professional manner. She had once attended a woman's club with Miss Clyde in Boston. "But owing to my absence from the city the coming winter I--" There was a roar of protest from the Club members, en masse. "I shall be leaving you about the first of January--" This announcement prevented the further order of business. Cries of "What for? Where to? For how long?" assailed Blue Bonnet. She made her plans and prospects clear to them. At first the girls seemed stunned. Joy turned to lamentation. There arose a chorus of wails, plaintive and doleful. They kept it up for some time--in concert--with Sarah Blake looking on in awed silence, forlorn and tearful, as if a real tragedy had descended upon her. Blue Bonnet took the tack hammer from Amanda's apathetic hand and rapped for order. "I neglected to state," she said, "that I shall be at home for the week-ends--at least I hope to be. I see

D then to the other, momentarily approaching closer to shore, however. Twice more Jack fired in response to Lord Hastings' command, but the result was always the same. As long as the pursued continued to zig-zag there was little hope of a successful shot. But in the meantime the pursuers were gaining. A bullet from ahead whistled over Frank's head. The lad grew angry and drew his own revolver. Taking careful aim, he fired. So far as he could see there was no result. "Where's that infallible aim of yours?" demanded Jack. Frank made no reply but fired again. This time his effort was rewarded. A figure straightened up in the boat ahead, waved his arms above his head, and with a cry toppled into the water. The boat did not slow down. The others plainly did not intend to take the time to attempt a rescue. "Shall we pick him up, sir?" asked Frank. Lord Hastings shook his head. "We have more serious business in hand," he replied. "He will have to take his chances." Still the pursuers gained; but it became apparent now that they could not hope to overtake their quarry before he reached shore. "Ready to take a shot as they jump out of the boat," was Lord Hastings' command. All drew their revolvers and stood ready. Now, there was little doubt in the minds of all that they could pick off the fugitives as they leaped ashore, and they probably would have done so but for an unforeseen occurrence. The pursuers had lost a little time in maneuvering to get in an effective shot, and the pursued now were more than a hundred yards ahead. As the first boat was a scant fifty yards from shore, a third craft hove in sight, headed down the river. It was going in s

Led instead of crippling him." "He's a bad lot," sighed the general. "Wing won't fly away from Kennedy, I fancy." "Not if there's a shot left in his belt," said Blake. "And Ray is officer-of-the-day. There'll be no napping on guard this night." At the barred aperture that served for window on the southward front, a dark face peered forth in malignant hate as the speakers strode by. But it shrank back, when the sentry once more tossed his carbine to the shoulder, and briskly trudged beneath the bars. Six Indians shared that prison room, four of their number destined to exile in the distant East,--to years, perhaps, within the casemates of a seaboard fort--the last place on earth for a son of the warlike Sioux. "They know their fate, I understand," said Blake, as the general moved on again. "Oh, yes. Their agent and others have been here with Indian Bureau orders, permitting them to s

Ructions and returned again to his quest. This time he made the bedroom the scene of his investigations. The safe he did not attempt to touch, but there was a small bureau in which Kara would have placed his private correspondence of the morning. This however yielded no result. By the side of the bed on a small table was a telephone, the sight of which apparently afforded the servant a little amusement. This was the private 'phone which Kara had been instrumental in having fixed to Scotland Yard--as he had explained to his servants. "Rum cove," said Fisher. He paused for a moment before the closed door of the room and smilingly surveyed the great steel latch which spanned the door and fitted into an iron socket securely screwed to the framework. He lifted it gingerly--there was a little knob for the purpose--and let it fall gently into the socket which had been made to receive it on the door itself. "Rum cove," he said again, and lifting the latch to the hook which held it up, left the room, closing the door softly behind him. He walked down the corridor, with a meditative frown, and began to descend the stairs to the hall. He was less than half-way down when the one maid of Kara's household came up to meet him. "There's a gentleman who wants to see Mr. Kara," she said, "here is his card." Fisher took the

T another reply to the question, 'Why do most people call the nightingale's a melancholy song?' It is heard by night, 'whilst our spirits are attentive,' and the solemn gloom of the hour influences the judgment of the ear; for another false impression, which like the monster Error of Spenser, has bred a thousand young ones as ill-favoured as herself, ascribes melancholy to night. There is no good reason why we should think thus of the night, still less that the impression should influence our judgment in other matters; and we owe no small thanks to those who have endeavoured to rec

any thing that may quench its lodgings, desires, or expectation. 10. Nay, if the sinner be come this length, that, with the bit willingness he hath, he consenteth to the bargain, and is not satisfied with any thing in himself, that draweth back, or consenteth not, and with the little skill or strength he hath is writing down his name, and saying, even so I take him; and is holding at this, peremptorily resolving never to go back, or unsay what he hath said; but, on the contrary, is firmly purposed to adhere, and as he groweth in strength, to grip more firmly, and adhere to him, he may conclude that the bargain is closed already, and that he hath faith already; for here there is an accepting of Christ on his own terms, a real consenting unto the covenant of grace, though weak, and not so discernible as the soul would wish. The soul dare not say but it loveth the bargain, and is satisfied with it, and longeth for it, and desireth nothing more than that it might partake thereof, and enjoy him whom it loveth, hungereth for, panteth after, or breatheth, as it is able, that it may live in him, and be saved through him. But some will say, If I had any evidence of God's approbation of this act of my soul, any testimony of his Spirit, I could then with confidence say, that I had believed and accepted of the covenant and of Christ offered therein; but so long as I perceive nothing of this, how can I suppose, that any motion of this

E of Pompeii. Give health to this Roman boy. O fairest Athena, shed new beauty upon our violet crowned Athens. For there is coming to visit her the best of men, my master Tetreius." [Illustration: _A Marble Table_: The lions' heads were painted yellow. You can see a table much like this in the garden pictured later.] VESUVIUS So a living city was buried in a few hours. Wooded hills and green fields lay covered under great ash heaps. Ever since that terrible eruption Vesuvius has been restless. Sometimes she has been quiet for a hundred years or more and men have almost forgotten that she ever thundered and spouted and buried cities. But all at once she would move again. She would shoot steam and ashes into the sky. At night fire would leap out of her top. A few times she sent out dust and lava and destroyed houses and fields. A man who lived five hundred years after Pompeii was destroyed described Vesuvius as she was in his time. He said: "This mountain is steep and thick with woods below. Above, it is very craggy and wild. At the top is a deep cave. It seems to reach the bottom of the mountain. If you peep in you can see fire. Bu

S was unfortunate, but apparently he didn't notice the mistake, for he went on at once.) 'But as I was saying, I'd been up Aconcagua before I left school.' 'Good gracious,' I replied, amazed at his intrepidity, 'that must have been an experience!' 'Rather,' said he: 'Haven't you read Conway's book? Published in '02, I think.' He strode across the room and brought back a volume. 'Yes, 1902: capital book; well worth reading. But Mexico,' he continued, without giving me time to display the knowledge that I suddenly recollected as I turned the pages of the book, 'Ah! there's a country
