Interesting news, Last year, teachers union in Kerala with membership of more than 75,000 (roughly 45% of teachers community in the state) called for a strike to force government to 1. Provide GNU/Linux training to teachers 2. Using GNU/Linux in schools rather than Microsoft Windows. The strike was successful with Govt starting free software training for teachers. Last month teachers union had taken effort to distribute Custom Debian GNU/Linux CDs to all schools in the state. Along with the government program for free software training, teachers union is also organising free software training sessions of teacher community. They are now thinking of various programs for teachers and students to encourage them to use GNU/Linux instead of Windows. Teachers union and left political groups in the state were able to for Microsoft's School education program out of this state. Today every year around 5,00,000 Students in the state are getting introduced to GNU/Linux in some way or other. Process is going on for last 3 years. Strike and related political campaigns had helped in creating public awareness about GNU/Linux and free software in general. RMS is as well known as Bill Gates. regards arun. _______________________________________________ lista coordinadores-hipatia [email protected] http://listas.hipatia.info/mailman/listinfo/coordinadores-hipatia www.listas.hipatia.info - [email protected] ------- End of Forwarded Message ------- -- Diego Saravia [email protected] [email protected] (usar solo si hay problemas con unsa.edu.ar)
