Dear Marco,
I find your proposal very interesting and as I'm using gmail, facebook, mac and advocating for an open world I feel like I need help...
So yes, there is a need for me to switch. yes I'm looking for an all together package because coding, setting-up this stuff is not my job and I'm ready and will be happy to pay / donate for a solution that is not hosted/cracked/checked/spyed by my dear nsa friends.
I believe I would'nt be the only one, and I'm sure there is a fair and clean service to provide to the commons.
Crowdfunding it or crowd-building it could also be a way to make things move quicker and gather forces for this beautiful project or asking for a quick "how many people would be interested in such a service" could be a start.
what do you think?
Ciao, Etienne
Etienne, as I promised, here is a complete answer: following **several** positive feedbacks and expressions of interest on my original proposal to replace digital walled gardens with properly packaged/integrated existing Free Software, here is a crowdfunding proposal on the same topic: http://stop.zona-m.net/2013/08/call-to-fund-research-on-an-easy-and-complete... Regardless of funding, which is obviously welcome, the first help you (Etienne) could give is to repost your whole email of July 31st as a comment to this post of mine. The more evidence I can provide *there* that there *IS* interest from non-geek end-users, the easier it will be to get this started! any further feedback and help to spread the word from everybody is very welcome, of course. Michel, let me know off list if/when you want to republish that post and/or its companion one: http://stop.zona-m.net/2013/08/call-to-fund-research-on-an-easy-and-complete... on the p2p foundation blog. Hi Marco and all, This is very good news to me. I have been wanting to do a similar thing but have never gotten around to it.
Regardless of funding
As strange as it sounds, I am very happy this is targeting software that runs on *shared* hardware. Sharing hardware is is a very difficult but extremely important problem that we must solve. I have been working on a "business model" to help us with this and with the apparent need for continuous external funding. This will help us compensate those who setup, operate and maintain servers and so quickly cover the earth with our alternative. Patrick Anderson http://ImputedProduction.BlogSpot.com

Patrick, 1) I'm happy to see you acknowledge the relevance of this basic point in my proposal. The 1000000% purist approach of the FreedomBox etc... is a showstopper in my opinion. On one hand, doing things (only) in that way only helps people who didn't really need them, because they already had the skills to do as they please. On the other hand, it can be a waste of hardware, that is of limited, polluting physical resources. 2) I know it's a bit of an hassle, but please post this answer of yours also as a comment to my blog. The more proofs of interests readers see, the likeliest they are to "buy" the idea :-) Thanks, Marco -- M. Greetings, everybody. Following this and other expressions of interest, I am happy to announce that there is now a home for this ""PERsonal/PERmanent, peer-2-peer Cloud" or.. percloud for short" at http://per-cloud.com as well as an indiegogo fundraising page, linked from the sidebar. Please help by spreading the word as much as possible. NOTE to everybody who contacted me offlist about this when I first mentioned the idea on this list: please come back to me with private email if I don't do it myself in the next 2/3 days, we need to restart our discussions.
