Developmental psychologists classify infants into three basic temperaments, in part by their response to strangers and strange situations. Type As are slow to react and easily overstimulated, which causes them to withdraw. Type Bs are eager to explore and quick to adjust to new circumstances. Type Cs are highly reactive to change, usually with loud protests. These types, observable at just a few months old, can persist into adulthood.
How do you react to change?
Even if our initial response to change is hard-wired, we're the most adaptive species ever, and we should be able to get better at changewhich is exactly what the world requires of us. That's why I'm very excited to let you know that I'm starting a new monthly column with Fast Company Magazine's March issue called Life in Beta. It's about change and innovation, both the kind we initiate and the kind we must adapt and respond to. What makes a business thrive in difficult times? When does preparing for the worst become planning to fail? How do you prepare to reinvent yourself gracefully? How do we think creatively about the impact of global threats to our economy, environment and way of life without being paralyzed or bursting into tears?
This month's column<http://ct.fastcompany.com/go2.shtml?SPVHTq8PW1yMftup/0ed73a46420b4a19/44e9bc0072bf196f/[email protected]>is about generosity; emerging technologies that help unlock our basic human impulses to share. If you are moved, I would love it if you could log on<http://ct.fastcompany.com/go2.shtml?SPVHTq8PW1yMftup/0ed73a46420b4a19/44e9bc0072bf196f/[email protected]>and speak up!
I'll be posting exclusive interviews and videos each week, and corresponding with readers too. I'm hoping that you'll help me keep the conversation going in the comments thread, or on Twitter (follow me @fcchange<http://ct.fastcompany.com/go2.shtml?SPVHTq8PW1yMftup/fd706d4b9a1be5a6/44e9bc0072bf196f/[email protected]>). Let's make Life in Beta a lively conversation about the aspects of change that impact you the most.
Sincerely, Anya
P.S. This is a personal email and the only one you'll receive from me. If you'd like to keep up to date on Life In Beta, add your name to the mailing list here<http://ct.fastcompany.com/go2.shtml?SPVHTq8PW1yMftup/ee4dbaebbba6c901/44e9bc0072bf196f/[email protected]>.
