Here a recap of our Viral Response Roundtable series To: <[email protected]> Hi Jose! A few weeks ago, we launched our Viral Response Roundtable series. Hosted by Wikifactory co-founder Christina Rebel, these sessions bring together experts and community members to share insights and learning from diverse perspectives. Here is a recap of what we have learned so far: Wikifactory set the stage by setting out *why we launched the **Viral Response platform*. <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=SvjDZA%2BcDpDkbtADYaAAfJmdu2ZUmu7ZCNbZA%2B4k2T8%3D&h=713430555f934b1c1e1cb4ba5e8f1c9488689c18-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=c9d99e0261869b4685bc4def364cb2a7617b10df-3409550> Therefore, our first session was on focused on *Collaborative Innovation for Future Resilience.* Among many other things that were discussed, we learned that *simple designs can be the most effective ones*, *as they can be easily replicated*. Furthermore, *the importance of speed* when supporting those in need when the supply chains fail us, and related to that, the importance innovating globally but producing locally through a global community and digital fabrication technologies. The final questions and conclusion focused on possibilities of what the future holds for this industry - that is, how it will have to move and work together with the collaboration of experts from other industries. In the second session, we deepened the discussion with one of the most recurring themes in the open hardware community: *funding*. This time, and considering how fast we need to act when fighting COVID-19, *we invited founders of non-profit open initiatives and experts involved in EU funded projects*. We learned from Jon Schull, founder of *E-Nable* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=7dWUMIoT%2F94tfhWZAahgieXi7d%2BYbKOg5R7JQcoUwvU%3D&h=787dccb0e8579594dfde7de1c216cd7ba859a582-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=d0f16387a05a2629b575d514779a250849f9ff52-3409490>, that they work with a *global online community that produces freely donated devices* allowing them to work with no funding, reaching a much larger audience. Other solutions focused on investment funding and collaborating with other institutions, although *proof and results are a must* in that case, and how it is necessary to *learn how to communicate about projects in order to attract experts* from other fields. Moving on to our third session, there were shared perspectives on *community building for open hardware projects*. The main insights included the importance of self-organisation within the maker communities, and once this structure is defined, there is a need to determine the role of each player within the project, and to attract *experts from the manufacturing, legal and medical fields*. Furthermore, often many groups *don't communicate with each other* and end up designing things that have already been created. Therefore, Slack was mentioned as a great tool to connect initiatives and communicate within smaller groups. Requirements need to be defined from the start, avoiding inefficiencies. Helpful Engineering even established a *selection process based on the team's experience, impact and scalability*. Once a project is accepted, it enters an incubation process where it receives supports from experts to define the requirements, evaluate funding opportunities and recruit new team members. However, *how do you sustain this once the hype dies down and "normality" returns?* More critically, how do you build on what was been learned, so the world is better prepared in the future? Oscar Velazquez talked about building long-term solutions, and how *Impact MX* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=HS1FIZmMkWGNqgmJ420CMeGnLOoQOkvNvnGfHwO8wQc%3D&h=68280e7e2f77ab8e9d953a650ec5d5c96a40313c-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=fa5f3aa7072c1c28f262b1c839dd82bec62b707b-3409491> is funding projects focused on preparing for the New Normal. Tom Salfield, CEO of Wikifactory, emphasized that we need *new business models that can be easily adopted in this context* and to make visible the success stories that show what's possible. We would also like to thank *Brynmor John* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=bxd2WCu272CIoRTtGv0kzZRPd9J1BqtfUMTfob3BSQq6NPEl5942CGuZtXMqkHfTW%2FW7M0n0LZtX81u3pyO1sQ%3D%3D&h=9735395ce2cf494f31a56519c90d406c1b0a3596-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=1d5225e27642e7fa6b14599bdb277b0528ad09df-3409492>, *Dr David Alkaher* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=YcTRMxg%2FVycJfXLEKv18y7uDVP4hh2T2cpuq%2BO%2BGRu0f3JPq%2BNdwWsVV48O216tn9RqbUioZedo0e8PDZ8dD0w%3D%3D&h=5422c68e676393c7583534dd6c107ed09cd5ab96-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=372553188c5314d35d2e54240919f2f9a418865e-3409493>, *Brian Berletic* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=5KxaN2kG9TR9zgfDvQyd0Z0gvd6j54xVxs%2F5Ubc8eVyJiHGybSFwm0MU7ErES%2B1I&h=c7d43bda06a945e9ff1ee91e55d51794fc99832d-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=2a600d18e9be36085f2e74b09925c0e4f95f2d23-3409494>, *Denis Fuzi* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=kzk2%2B3BzanBDWHeFDEjG4m6erFc7ZYnPd1wWsGlpW1ndKo7ZLNURgU6DvPwwt0OD&h=a391e8a6f4a0b4d3978f74bbcda1dba91d763e0b-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=c7b4666764d5f267fe9084e68abec7929df94c21-3409495>, *Tauan Bernardo* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=xqhBp5Lt2f7RgPrCJflq%2FxY8Uf0Agsl6PxLXLjUMmlBLYd0zq8q%2Br84PcXZzdHWG&h=3a500938fb9e2be4a2d0bbbbbf88c25cff9b90bb-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=0ad147276468c0c44d2c1ec52d03ae76d795436b-3409496>, *Guillermo Martínez* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=7r9NkzD1F5P9JIqjN1lR%2Fyw%2FpTQtUsjYhoATKXfQD5YvW6ijJZkpcrQhnC3JUlUhdbAS1j%2FUVkMaLH%2FGi6aeXA%3D%3D&h=83dc4e4ee417c1ea5f3a4407bfe565f5e5bfb340-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=96a462f3fbd7159fe8883fb4672559e0cc2518f6-3409497>, *Diego Trapero* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=PtssZ9AkXckm0w2vV3x4R747kDeDVSQ2I%2F8ZE9HHIc7XNW%2F32Fx5k4pC6%2BJOTbbb&h=3f69c3faf754b84bf7255e92c54f522c1af03144-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=f68711a81fa4c7db5ba79a411ddce4a6cc5160c8-3409498>, *Jon Schull* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=%2BnwfskKFcr8b854j5gw%2B2jgRpu5YBllNvc7NZKLxb72%2BNOCxb2FfEgSk5jFpI1E6&h=b75855894450e966ed5251b93ca49068af08ae73-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=024f1a03f07437b4a0e748162eaac2937f5f9fa4-3409499>, *Kate Armstrong* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=35axdHgs01s5GTpzvJ3VatVzes8jEODJcV7vQOw6iX5yFi7mQKKrBXNuZ38IFTNs&h=435194a16159bdd6341a651f2c8444ba9cf5d9eb-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=aadf202f917b9eb6763bc844b666c676e6c27782-3409500>, *Robert Mies* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=scfg8Q9Ddv3aAGRywJWLE5w7MSy3iubioKJ5F186CLg%3D&h=b13be25a5af53c5b3478246421cb31caea56b65b-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=a816f735eed625d0621fbcffb1bdca2201ab108e-3409501> , *Roisin Lyons* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=oUqbl8j%2BqM0kU%2B%2BB%2ByY%2FjyGs%2FjOLh3oHXx8pT8JvzKeRyX%2BgCry%2Bi9Obm1XfCSQP&h=50433cd58f8f66579cbeda4ccb40ae45bca6670a-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=ec5e7a810ec9fe59dcdb7819371ba77f7d1c0fd6-3409502>, *Nathan Parker* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=U2aRziYxwYhX0%2BPMQ%2B%2BOAiEwPgmUdsmkllOYZ1v4Xc5lRFRVM1BAYKwrLhX3f5WTy0unAgTgp0JIZ3GtzRWf%2BQ%3D%3D&h=ca691767974a8c6d3402490a114bf86643e14a4f-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=ece12316dd1ad986b00a96a97b1d46e63e10df34-3409503>, *Oscar Velazquez* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=vLSD9bTJjWTpnhrrZYUQ2KiOynIVadhaXI2v0fNqRRnhBzWbFxjmy2TvEbj2njf%2B&h=35673b4a23c7fe99304c8ed411e4e53adb1a0446-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=ed641a9f318375b489551de78170c4ccc9477977-3409504>, *Barbara Kieslinger* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=XoBt0XG0EhmWqZJtGreyZnEtpAGW61Qo1rriqrak%2FcFSDE4CxplO%2F50oi6r2xpI2&h=2abf46de733e721aad84fa40698445fc90c6a044-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=d8edb32569292fd8b95308d53d90adcc930e5bdc-3409505>, *Barry Watkins* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=dZU4eH%2F2CJzxNbr1k%2FutLIkPtejJnsnQ2btnwtNIv%2F3wmMhyWw6nK05WoQjEllKl&h=3f120e70d418bad84f9f41319be1379983cce0a6-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=54cebb00c218f793368acdbfb176767521a43cfb-3409506> and our co-founders *Christina Rebel* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=ekLdbGdSJ853UFIMNaj8KQp6tgBkkN0efeWQUjAaAQ6M0w3XqI6GZ2IxqkR4u2CG&h=ddf77def6a553c5534ed8e9a9ce477183d1a620b-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=07136750e0408190190c6aebde5e4f69cb011c44-3409507> and *Tom Salfield* <https://wikifactory-24be178391b8.intercom-clicks.com/via/e?ob=XHcH95K19tmqECZPUUoD8TKTUEDDWhyX6gMHCbNVmBSEY9RJ5H8wcZiu9BJMibFu&h=20bf2521c7fc580b02e4bb702ac665e4699deed4-f7fp07h1_27286548820&l=25b95e2b750ed649ad0c2b7cad98d19b80a9750e-3409508> for taking part in these inspiring sessions.
