FireChat, and it's use by Hong Kong protesters, is very much in the news. For instance there is a New York Times Story today - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/06/technology/hong-kong-protests-propel-a-phone-to-phone-app-.html . There is some confusion over how the app actually works, so today makers Open Garden have published what amounts to a FAQ - 'FireChat - what it is and what it is not' at http://opengardening.tumblr.com/post/99296368130/firechat .

At 6am EDT | 10am UTC - about 30 mins from now - Open Garden CEO Micha Benoliel will go live with our Hong Kong Chapter to further elucidate.

Today Monday October 6 2014 at 6pm HKT the Internet Society's Honk Kong Chapter (ISOC HK) will present a Meetup with FireChat creator Micha Benoliel, Co-founder and CEO of Open Garden. Firechat is a phone app that enables off-the-grid communication, e.g. when there is no Internet connection or cellular phone coverage, much utilized by students during the current Hong Kong protests. The meetup will focus on the technical aspects, and will be webcast live on the Internet Society Chapters Channel.
