Thanks for your help! I use ADSL and use wi-fi to the modem/router which is in
another room.

But it looks like the problem is actually getting the Wifi to work and
communicate with the router (I get a no signal message)

as root do

iwconfig

tell us what appears... what's your wifi card? is it supported by linux kernel? Did it work with other distros? if not, did you seen if its supported by ndiswrapper? i think you have to compile de driver... don't worry we help you
