Is not essential, audacity doesnt works with JACK, and you can run timidity, qsynth, hydrogen, zynaddsubfx with Rosegarden without JACK... but, in that case, you will have to record the output of the MIDI software synths with something like audacity and setup you mixer (ie: gnome-alsamixer, etc) to record from _wave_ output, ¿ok? If you use your internal SB chip to load soundfonts (asfxload file.sf2) you have to enable "Synth" output rec (capture), ¿ok? > I've yet to explore the whole > realm of soundfonts as the general MIDI stuff works fine for me. Ok, try with Rosegarden + a little soundfont, not bigger than 30mb, loaded into your soundcard. There is a good Rosegarden tutorial into the rosegarden's web page. > >> How does Musix differ to Demudi? > > > > It's more up to date, and it's easier for newbies, it's a live-cd > > but can update old musix or knoppix HD installations (aldo > > Debian/etch installations) > > Well then I qualify! Greetings everyone. I just downloaded the Musix 0.50 iso image, and burned it to CD. For some reason, the CD does not boot. So far, I have tried Roxio for Windows, k3b on Linux and cdrecord on Linux to create CD's from the .iso image, and the results are the same; CD just won't boot. My PC doesn't see system loader on the CD; it times out and then boots from the hard drive. I will try these CD's in my machine at work, and I will try downloading the .iso to that machine and burn a disk with it. I have an idea of the questions that will come my way, so here are the answers to some of them: Yes, I have booted from CD in the past, in fact, I have Musix 0.40 currently installed using Grub to dual-boot with Win XP Pro. No, I have not tried these CD's in another PC. I will do that at work. Yes, I have mouted the CD's to see if data is on them. Yes, I have mouted the .iso image on the loop back device and compared it to what was on the CD; it all matched. Does anybody else have this problem with Musix 0.50? Thank you for your help, -=cybersean3000=- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
Sorry to reply to my own message. I downloaded the 0.50 iso image at work, burned it with cdrecord, and it booted successfully. The problem seems to be with my PC at home. Sorry to bother you with this. By the way . . . 0.50 is very impressive! Nice work! -=cybersean3000=- --- Sean Edwards <[email protected]> wrote: I just downloaded the Musix 0.50 iso image, and burned it to CD. Thanks, there is mucho work to do. Musix 0.59 is almost ready: 600 software packages were upgraded, and I installed udev, so, it's a little difficult to work with some issues now, as instance, the soundcard detecction was made using hotplug into Musix 0.50, but now with udev I can't use hotplug, so I modified alsaconf to work in an auto mode and to detect multiple soundcards..... I am sending you this file if you want to test this, because it will be into Musix 0.59 and we need to know if it works fine. /usr/sbin/alsaconf /usr/sndconf-musix.sh You can test it by typing into a root konsole: alsaconf auto > -=cybersean3000=- > > --- Sean Edwards <[email protected]> wrote: > > I just downloaded the Musix 0.50 iso image, and burned > it to CD. Thank you. When I get a successful boot at home, I will let you know. Also, I have an external usb SoundBlaster; 5.1 compliant. Is there an easy (easier?) way to configure the inputs and outputs with alsa? With the front Left and Right, the rear Left and Right and center channel (Left and Right?), I actually have 5 (or 6?) line-level outputs. This would be handy for when I play live and need to isolate instrument sounds into a mixer channels for live playback. -=cybersean3000=- --- Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> wrote:

According to the change log quoted below, it is possible to update old musix versions. Where is the documentation on how to do this? https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php/Changelog-en Musix version until now, also, 0.50 can update old Musix versions, as instance Musix 0.40 could be updated without re-install all the system. -=cybersean3000=- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? But, if you want to try now: just boot with Musix 0.50, clic on "Install" icon, select knoppix method, select package upgrader.... then choose a hard disk partition where Musix or Knoppix is installed and Synaptic will appear, choose your packages to be upgraded, and apply :D > Musix version until now, also, 0.50 can update old > Musix versions, as instance Musix 0.40 could be > updated without re-install all the system. > > -=cybersean3000=- > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Tired of spam? This is turning into a project and will have to wait until next week. Last night I just received enought parts to build another PC, so I will put 0.40 on that and try the upgrade. Also, if you have the time and are interested, I would like to discuss a package addtion to Musix that I am working on. -=Sean Edwards=- --- Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> wrote:

I play guitar and sing in a couple of bands. In a few weeks, I will be going out of town to play and sing. Unfortunately, I am on my own, neither band can travel. So, I will go by myself with some backing tracks. Did I mention that I play guitar? Even though there is great software available for playing audio files (ecasound is my favorite), I can't use my hands. I have a very powerful MIDI foot pedal, the FCB101 from Behringer, but there is no software that I have found to control the loading and playback of audio files via MIDI. After years of searching, I came across dispmidi from Div Slomin: http://www.sreal.com:8000/~div/midi-utilities. I am not a developer, but I was able to hack the code to output MIDI information into a useful format. So, there it was, a utility to parse the incoming MIDI stream from my foot pedal and launch a file, any file. Here are a couple of commads I used: dispmidi /dev/midi | grep Program | cut -f 4 | xargs -i script.sh {} dispmidi /dev/midi | grep Program | cut -f 4 | xargs -i ecasound {}.wav The first command takes the program number and pipes it into a script via xargs and the script launches the file. The second command actually launches a file named with the number of the MIDI program number. When that MIDI program number is detected, the corresponding file is launched. So, there it is. MIDI controlled (well, more like started than controlled) playback of audio files. As I said before, I am not a developer, but I have some enhancements I would like to make: 1) Read a configuration file to set MIDI channel and directory where the playback files reside 2) Make it alsa/jackd aware so as to be able to send out MIDI signals. For example, be able to send a MIDI sequence in real-time, synchronixed to audio file playback 3) Keep it a command-line utility. It doesn't take a lot of computing power to stream a .wav file through a sound card so it would be useful task for older hardware. Also, I plan to run this headless and it would be easier to do this from a command line rather than having to set up some GUI frambuffer application. What do you think? -=Sean Edwards=- --- Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> wrote:

Thats great > So, > there it was, a utility to parse the incoming MIDI > stream from my foot pedal and launch a file, any file. I played with a band in a few years ago, and that kind of utility could made my life easier: i went with my PC and i had to start the audio tracks with thoe mouse, looking at the PC monitor, so, I can understand you. > Here are a couple of commads I used: > > dispmidi /dev/midi | grep Program | cut -f 4 | xargs > -i script.sh {} > > dispmidi /dev/midi | grep Program | cut -f 4 | xargs > -i ecasound {}.wav > > The first command takes the program number and pipes > it into a script via xargs and the script launches the > file. I really dont know how could we do it... maybe using some of this apps: jack_bufsize jackeq jack_load jack_simple_client jack_connect jack_lsp jack_snapshot jackd jack_freewheel jack_metro jack-rack.sh jackstart jack_disconnect jack_impulse_grabber jack_monitor_client jackrec jack_transport jack-dssi-host jack_showtime jack_unload > 3) Keep it a command-line utility. It doesn't take a > lot of computing power to stream a .wav file through a > sound card so it would be useful task for older > hardware. Yes, but it's not so difficult to make a command-line and X app at the same time... you could use gmessage or kdialog for X if it has to be interactive... and dialog for console, or "read", etc. > Also, I plan to run this headless and it > would be easier to do this from a command line rather > than having to set up some GUI frambuffer application. Oh... well, let's do it in the command line ¿do you have a script to show us? dispmidi /dev/midi | grep Program | cut -f 4 | xargs -i script.sh {} do you have this script.sh? this should have all the changes you want to do? > What do you think? > > -=Sean Edwards=- > > > > > > > > --- Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> > > wrote: > > El Mircoles, 16 de Agosto de 2006 23:50, Sean > > > > Edwards escribi: > > > This is turning into a project and will have > > > > to wait > > > > > until next week. synaptic was the name of the program that i used to upgrade, and the options were set to smart upgrade so i only updated the packages that were already installed. i havent heard of apt-get, nor would i know how to use it, as for the xdm when it crashes... well, ill reboot after updating my packages, and then i get a note saying the xdm dont work and then its a back screen with the login box (text)... and then it runs as if it were in dos or something Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> wrote: El Miércoles, 16 de Agosto de 2006 23:45, greg h escribió:

i cant remember the name but i update all the debian packages
apt-get upgrade? apt-get dist-upgrade?
and then my X display manager crashes
It opens and then crashes? did you tried with videoconfig.sh script?
and i cant repair it so i have to reinstall musix. is there another way to update musix safely?
MM... I dont know what are you doing: if using synaptic or apt-get, and I dont know what packages are you upgrading
when the XDM goes out i find myself to be in a DOS kind of mode, still learning the language but not quite there yet
If you are using Musix 0.50, you can type menu A menu will appear, and you can go to videoconfig.sh, or something else.

Musix version until now, also, 0.50 can update old Musix versions, as instance Musix 0.40 could be updated without re-install all the system.
