Hi everyone? As maxigas has been so active in developing JoPP the editorial team (Francesca, Johan, Maurizio, Nate, Sara and me) decided to "make it official" by inviting him to join us, he accepted, and we are delighted to have him. Since the release of JoPP#5, a number of new people have subscribed to this list. We don't have any rules about this apart from (I guess) welcoming you, inviting you to join in discussions, and - if you feel like it - introducing yourselves and your interests? Or: should the membership list be made public? I don't know. Finally, looking ahead: -issue#5 on shared machine shops was just released (for consistency's sake, I propose to backdate it to July 2014) -issue#6 on law to be released in Dec/jan -special issue on #FLOK to be released in Feb (numbered or not?) -issue on #feminism to be released in July First question: is this all a bit much - should we space things out a bit? Delay FLOK maybe? Second question: what comes after? It was mentioned that #feminism may be split in two. Whether that happens or not, we need to think about future issues. Johan and others have agreed to work on an "alternative internet" issue, inspired by this event: http://www.iscc.cnrs.fr/spip.php?article1912 Thanks to them for taking this on. More info soon. We need further issues. We have never addressed privacy / surveillance. I contacted someone in that space, but she declined, too busy. Is anyone out there interested in putting a team together around that? if any other ideas are forthcoming, and you want to explore them privately as a first step: please email an editorial team member directly. Or post straight here. We need to plan things well in advance. It really is very open, and an opportunity to explore ideas in any direction, with like-minded people, whilst having fun, so don't be shy! On behalf of the editorial team, cheers, Mathieu

I'd favor being honest and keeping it listed as October 2014, since that was when it was actually announced. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who participated in making that issue, it's outstanding! Hi all @Angela and Steve: you now have admin rights so you can start playing around with your issue content and structure. There are some extensive instructions here: http://peerproduction.net/about/advice/ Let us know if you have any problems. @Peter and Christian: currently the issues page looks like this: http://peerproduction.net/issues/? ISSUE 00<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-0/> MASS PEER ACTIVISM. RELEASED JULY 2011 ISSUE 01<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-1/> PRODUCTIVE NEGATION. RELEASED: JULY 2012 ISSUE 02<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-2/> BIO/HARDWARE HACKING. RELEASED: JULY 2012 ISSUE 03<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-3-free-software-epistemics/> CRITICAL POWER OF FREE SOFTWARE. RELEASED: JULY 2013 ISSUE 04<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-4-value-and-currency/> VALUE AND CURRENCY. RELEASED: JANUARY 2014 ISSUE 05<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-5-shared-machine-shops> SHARED MACHINE SHOPS. RELEASED: OCTOBER 2014 ISSUE 06<http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-3-free-software-epistemics/> LAW AND DISRUPTION. TO BE RELEASED: JANUARY 2015? Issue #04 was released in April 2014 but in order to keep this schedule consistent-looking we backdated it. If we start having non-consistent release dates then it looks quite messy IMO. We could indicate on the #05 page that it was released in October but still date it from July 2014 on the issues page. cheers, Mathieu ________________________________ From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Dr. Peter Troxler <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 2:25 To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] News and Issues On 17 Nov 2014, at 15:58, Christian Siefkes <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: I'd favor being honest and keeping it listed as October 2014, since that was when it was actually announced. +1

I keep saying July 2014 is just fine ... nobody will bother after 2015 ... or not even after 2014 / Peter
Hi Peter I was under the impression that you were arguing the opposite, but glad you see things like that. I think the below is a reasonable compromise, hope everyone else agrees. cheers Mathieu ________________________________ From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Dr. Peter Troxler <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2014 20:59 To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] News and Issues On 30 Nov 2014, at 02:05, Mathieu ONeil <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: We could indicate on the #05 page that it was released in October but still date it from July 2014 on the issues page. Hi Mathieu, I don't know exactly what should I do to propose a new topic for the journal, but after reading your mail I would like to send you an idea: a new number about money, that is to say, about alternative currencies, crytocurrencies, digital currencies... and the communities that grow around them. I am very interested in this topic and although Geert Lovink and the Institute of Network Cultures are working on it, I think is worthy enough to deserve more different approaches and researches. Also I would like to know more about the number on feminism from the p2p perspective. Maybe I can collaborate in this specific topic. Congratulation for a work well done! Your wish has been granted. The issue Shared Machine Shops was #4: Value and Currency. It is still quite fresh and up-to-date with developments and contains some super articles. You can read them here: http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-4-value-and-currency/ -- maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 http://research.metatron.ai/ When capitalism started it wasn’t legal.
Great! Thank you very much! What about the markets of raw materials and electronic components used in projects of open source hardware?. There is a big gap in this area, usually they only show the final product. Is it interesting enough for a new number? Regards, pz 2014-11-18 10:55 GMT-06:00 maxigas <[email protected]>:

Hi Paz, all Thanks for your suggestion. My 2.5 cents: my understanding of the journal is that anything that relates to the commons / peer production, understood as a social relation, mode of production, etc where people control what they do, is relevant. Now, one of our stated themes of interest is industry/ecology, and sustainability could certainly be related to that. At the same time the issue you raise - exploitation of resources, toxicity of e-waste - goes far beyond our control, to the heart of the industrial/capitalist system. This issue has been reported on - though not enough - by organisations such as the Basel Action Group. That is important but we would also need to figure out whether people somewhere are extracting their own resources to build stuff/electronics in a safe and sustainable way, in order not just to focus on the negative, but also to highlight alternatives. I am planning to propose an issue on the limits of self-governance, so not ready to take on additional work, but if others want to I would support them. cheers, Mathieu ________________________________ From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Paz Sastre <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 7:34 To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] News and Issues Great! The Call for Proposals for the Feminism and (Un)hacking issue is available here: http://peerproduction.net/feminism-and-unhacking/. You might want to take a look at it. In January 2015, we will be reaching out to quite a few scholars and practitioners for the peer review process with the Feminism and (Un)hacking issue. Just let us know if you are interested in participating in this process. Best, Sophie Congratulation for a work well done!
