Re: [implementations-list] Mailing list administration, Gmane

As a next step in my diabolic plan, I'd like to subscribe the list to Gmane <http://gmane.org>. It provides a lot of nice features, including convenient searching interface, easy linking to mails, threads etc. I've come to really like it (this is actually currently the only list without Gmane mirror I'm following; I read all the others in Gnus via Gmane).
Sure, feel free to fill in their add form. But if you want Gmane to import the archives, don't fill in the add form; ask us to do it instead. Note that this might require more steps than a usual Gmane archives import, as ourproject.org is the list host, so we might have to ask them for a tarball of the archives.
Any objections/ideas?
In any case, please could the mailing list maintainership be transferred or extended to Vegard? If Jason is the only maintainer (or not?), I'm guessing we're going to wait for his reply for about a month.
Alessandro and I are the list co-admins. If Vegard wants to take over list co-adminship from Alessandro, that's fine with me; in fact, I think it's a good idea, since I have so little time for Vimpulse-related tasks. I suggest that he phone me at +1 (416) 992-3445 between 11AM and 11PM Eastern Standard Time (Toronto time) to set a password. Štěpán, if Vegard doesn't reply within two weeks, you can be my list co-admin instead. Phone me. Mailman requires that all list co-admins must know one shared password. I don't like that but don't want to bother writing to the Mailman folks. -- Jason Spiro: software/web developer, packager, trainer, IT consultant. I support Linux, UNIX, Windows, and more. Thanks! So, several things (TO ALL READERS of this list -- I'd really appreciate your input at least on points 2. and 3. below): 1. It's best to import the ML archive before actually providing the Gmane interface, as it is less work/trouble (no article re-numbering problems etc.). For that, we should provide a single mbox file containing the archive (see <http://gmane.org/import.php>). At <https://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/implementations-list/>, there are gzipped mbox archives per-month, so it's not that bad -- I can just download them all and `cat' them into a single file, but I thought I'd ask anyway -- do you have access to a single file containing all the archives? 2. Gmane uses a NNTP-like newsgroups hierarchy, so we should settle on how we suggest Gmane to name the group. I assume it's rather uncontroversial that we should be something in the `gmane.emacs' hierarchy, so the question is about that "something". My suggestion is `gmane.emacs.vim-emulation' (as a side note, the name of this list has always seemed really bad to me -- it says nothing about what the list is about; but I guess we have to live with that -- and those who might come after us, too. Another option would be to not be so general and go for `gmane.emacs.vimpulse', but AIUI this list was supposed to provide a wider forum. Any ideas really appreciated. I guess `gmane.emacs.modal' is kinda nice, too, but probably overly general.) 3. By default, nowadays Gmane encrypts all mail addresses in the news and web interfaces as an anti-spam measure (it looks like <[email protected]>). Those addresses are valid, i.e. you can send mail to them just fine (and it gets redirected to the actual subscription address), it's just a kind of obfuscation. I personally dislike it and it can be switched off at subscription time, but I'm not going to do that unless more people on this list feel the same -- in my impression, most people prefer obfuscation or even subscribed-only mailing lists to the occasional (very rare in my limited experience, but don't take my word for it) spam message. No, I see no such option in the admin pages. :(

I think this is the best suggestion, since the list also talks about other packages like viper-in-more-modes.el and vim-mode.

It can be changed. Here are the relevant fields from the administrative interface, along with descriptions: REAL_NAME: implementations-list The capitalization of this name can be changed to make it presentable in polite company as a proper noun, or to make an acronym part all upper case, etc. However, the name will be advertised as the email address (e.g., in subscribe confirmation notices), so it should not be otherwise altered. (Email addresses are not case sensitive, but they are sensitive to almost everything else :-) DESCRIPTION: Vi/Vim implementations list This description is used when the mailing list is listed with other mailing lists, or in headers, and so forth. It should be as succinct as you can get it, while still identifying what the list is. SUBJECT_PREFIX: [implementations-list] This text will be prepended to subject lines of messages posted to the list, to distinguish mailing list messages in mailbox summaries. Brevity is premium here, it's ok to shorten long mailing list names to something more concise, as long as it still identifies the mailing list. You can also add a sequential number by %d substitution directive. eg.; [listname %d] -> [listname 123] (listname %05d) -> (listname 00123) Although changing them isn't painless, if there ever was a right moment to do it, it is now.

That's OK, it should be trivial to do it semi-manually, thanks for checking.

Well, only the meta-data you mention below can be changed, not the most important thing, i.e. the address, which says it all (or rather nothing, in our case). ;-) But I assume adjusting the meta-data to match that of Gmane could be an improvement. [snip]

Please ditch this completely; I wanted to ask for its removal anyway -- it's no use and only takes away a lot of already-so-precious space in the Subject: header. I doubt anyone uses it for anything -- you'd normally manipulate your mail according to the occurence of the address in From: or To:/Cc: headers.

Let's try it without encryption then. So we're going to apply for a group gmane.emacs.vim-emulation with description "Vim emulation in Emacs" without e-mail address encryption. There is also a "Project URL" field, which will be blank in our case, as the list is not supposed to be limited to one project only. Štěpán

Done.
