More than Human Episode 1- The River is Us: A Conversation with Alyen Foning
Dear all, We will be having our first episode of the More than Human: Creative Expressions series on the 29th of August, at 1 pm GMT/6:30 pm IST. A series of online sessions on creative expressions focussing on the more-than-human, this webinar series features people connecting to other species and the rest of nature in spiritual, artistic, and visceral ways. What would it be like if a River could sing about her ordeal, turtles could speak of their incredible journeys across the seas as also of vanishing coasts, and Hoolock gibbons could narrate their relationship to trees? Indigenous peoples and other nature dependent local communities have always been in communication with the more-than human world, as everything has been alive with agency. In recent times we have also seen people living in modern contexts expressing themselves as if they are a tree or a turtle or a river and so on, finding a voice within through deep listening of the natural world, and manifesting this through their writing, song making, drawing, research and activism. We want to highlight voices from the Global South specifically, and so our first speaker is Alyen Foning, a shaman from the Lepcha community from India. She resides in her ancestral home, Kalimpong -the Lepcha community, with its sacred mountains and rivers, at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Inspired by her Lepcha roots and reflections of her life's journey, Alyen uses her art and storytelling as a medium to help others remember their own ecological connections. Using fabrics, colours, music and design, her work serves as a bridge between the fields of art and research, and between ancestral pasts and future generations. Through her storytelling we journey through longing, loss and disconnection. Finding our way forward through remembrance we delve into our origins, shamanism and our deep connection and interdependence to nature. Dear GTA community and friends, We are seeking abstracts for chapters and creative contributions (artistic, poetic, musical, performative, or any other) to be considered for inclusion in this exciting book project which is confirmed to be published open access by Edward Elgar Publishing<https://www.e-elgar.com/>. “Urban human-nature partnerships – From the Anthropocene to the Ecocene” Edited by Martina Artmann, Jessica Böhme, Markus Egermann, Christoph Woiwode The book aims to re-discover, re-think, and re-sense the soulfulness, intelligence, and relational value of nonhuman nature in cities, its peri-urban borders and urban land teleconnections. We seek chapter proposals that engage with the following themes: • System knowledge: The contributions of this section will reflect on a relational perspective of urban social-ecological systems presenting cutting-edge research on urban sustainability challenges and human´s and nonhuman´s nature self-efficacy to speak with an own voice. • Target knowledge: Chapters of this section will present future visions that nourish innovative thinking and ideas for a good life for human and nonhuman nature and thereby provide science, civic population, and decision-makers basic points of reference on how to approach the desired change. • Transformation knowledge: The selected chapter of this section will illustrate external and internal pathways of individual and collective actors which foster transformative turning points for joyful and serious kin-making with nonhuman nature in urban daily life. We welcome a range of theoretical, empirical and practical studies from all parts of the world (co-)authored by people with diverse backgrounds. Therefore, apart from academic contributions we explicitly invite innovative formats that explore human-nature partnerships beyond intellectual textual explorations, such as artistic, poetic, or performative. For further information, please find enclosed a flyer with links to the detailed description of the aims and structure of the book, the schedule and formal guidelines as well as the online submission. If you are resonating with the book and interested in contributing to it, please send us a brief chapter proposal, including: * • working title * • list of authors and affiliations * • information to which book section (system, target, or transformation knowledge) you´ll contribute to and how * • intention to contribute to an academic text-chapter or if you present an artistic, poetic, or performative case * • abstract of approximately 250 words Please submit your expressions of interest till 15th September 2024 via the online submission form<https://eu.jotform.com/241711884638969> We are looking forward to receive your many ideas! Thanks colleagues of Global Tapestry for sharing this invitation. Sure I will join as I am one who honors and publishes so many articles related to the cosmology for the "good living" of my ancestors and indigenous communities where I come from (Andean-Amazon of Peru). Do we need to subscribe to join the meeting? it seems not, isn't it? For the next meeting you will organize, I would like to present the cosmovision of the Andean in relation to water, how we see it as a divinity and creator of LIVE on earth. My last publication, related to Marañon River, explains, in part, this: https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/rights-of-nature You can also see the video I did, explaining how indigenous people from Colca Valley (andes of Peru) honour water: the video is called “Al Encuentro del Mallku” the water deity in Colca Valley: https:///watch?v=fo8SDgJt984 <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo8SDgJt984>. Kind regards, and I appreciate your answer in advance.
