Dear PeDAGoG Members, I wanted to share a recent interesting and meaningful experience that came about directly as a result of this network. You are aware (mostly thanks to my own emails) that Sujit and I offered the first session in the new webinar series called 'Learnings for Alternative Futures' (designed in collaboration with several valuable networks) by presenting our initiative, 'Living Utopias' on April 1, 2022. It was a session with a small group and we had a very useful conversation amongst the participants. One of them , Melanie Bush (more on her in our google sheet <https://bit.ly/3MWczsB> ) reached out to us in the following week and we had a lovely conversation about pedagogies and experiential learning- making abstract values more tangible. And so I learnt from Melanie (with her generous sharing of ideas ) how to set up an assignment around a Time Bank in a classroom space . I was skeptical but my students in an Indian University (36 of them) rose to the occasion and exceeded the brief and more. They paired up on their own and shared their skills and gifts. So from bike rides to coffee evenings to cooking, a lake walk, a photoshoot, braiding hair, to watching a film together, playing childhood games - they completed their time sharing tasks in myriad ways. And just like that my University class transformed like magic . We had a whole unit on Solidarity Economics with the usual reading list but now each one of them came back to class with a different mind set towards learning. They were so much more engaged as participants in ideas around Living Utopias. Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring, It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up. These students are in the age group of 22-27 years. Coming out of COVID closures, and increased polarisation in the world around them, several are struggling to make and maintain real physical comradeship and friendships. Many are also very despondent about the future. In this context, thanks to such a simple assignment, I got to connect with my students in a very different and humane way. I wanted to publicly thank Melanie in this forum for this impromptu collaboration. Following our webinar was Dan Baron's fantastic session and a 3rd webinar in the series is on its way. I hope what is now set rolling continues and we do not stop soon. Because look how New York affected Bangalore!. Best, Pallavi -- https://naitaleem.wordpress.com/ -- https://naitaleem.wordpress.com/

That's amazing and inspiring, Pallavi! And thanks Melanie! This is so much the essence of this kind of forum and network ... and it probably happens every once in a while but is not always reported back. In the Vikalp Sangam process we get such news occasionally, of bilateral or multilateral linkages made at the Sangam confluences or online, resulting in some wonderful collaborations and actions, and it then all seems worth the constant emailing, phoning, and following up! :) It would be great to get one or more of the students to write about this experience, which we can carry on vikalp sangam website .. and perhaps they can also publish in one of the youth magazines? And/or you writing about it ... with a bit more elaboration on what they tried, how they were transformed etc ? Pallavi, I am moved by your experience and your generosity. Every time I use this assignment the students go from being extremely skeptical - including saying things like what do I have to offer and how could one hour matter - to being opened to affirmations of worth and possibility. Perhaps we might do a joint essay? We've already begun exploring how we might match our students with each other in a future time bank experience. I feel certain we'll figure out how to do that for an extraordinary experience. I'll also report that from the PeDaGoG network, Sayan and I connected. One of his colleagues at WITS CDS spoke with my Ethnicity class this spring (as did Devika btw), and I spoke with folks at the center yesterday and we'll be meeting up again later today. Also met with Patrick Bond yesterday, Ashish, who I believe you know well. Building forward with inspiration from all of you. Thank you Ashish and the GTA core team for all your efforts in pulling us together. Very grateful to be a part of this initiative.
Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring,
It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up.
Best, Pallavi

Dear Pallavi and Melanie, Thank you for sharing this inspiring story. I, too, would love to hear more about the details of the assignment. It is wonderful to learn about the intersecting ripples of our projects, and how a small kindness or act of radical solidarity can go a long way. I was reminded of this point yesterday while reading Vandana Singh's moving tribute to Ursula K. Le Guin ('True Journey is Return: A Tribute to Ursula K. Le Guin'), in her newly published Utopias of the Third Kind (PM Press, 2022). In the closing section of the book, Vandana recalls Ursula's kindness and encouragement at a particularly difficult time, and the transformative impact of a seemingly small bit of writerly solidarity. I think of this sort of effect in terms of ripples, or spatiotemporal links and echoes, leaps and recurrences. As Singh reminds us in the closing pages of her tribute, such transformative effects can even linger long after a person has died. So well done Pallavi and Melanie, and here's to hearing more about the unpredictable and life-affirming but far too frequently unacknowledged impacts of our acts of solidarity and mutual aid! Me too, Melanie! (I'm embarrassed I didn't pick her brain enough on this topic because last night we enjoyed a Cuban meal and covered many other controversies, at my favourite new restaurant in the bohemian Johannesburg suburb of Melville, where her visit to quite a diverse set of comrades is reigniting some internationalism, solidarity-economies and alternative pedagogies that have been dormant too long.) You are aware (mostly thanks to my own emails) that Sujit and I offered the first session in the new webinar series called 'Learnings for Alternative Futures' (designed in collaboration with several valuable networks) by presenting our initiative, 'Living Utopias' on April 1, 2022.
Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring,
It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up.
Best, Pallavi

Blessings all, Melanie

It would be great to get one or more of the students to write about this experience, which we can carry on vikalp sangam website .. and perhaps they can also publish in one of the youth magazines? And/or you writing about it ... with a bit more elaboration on what they tried, how they were transformed etc ?

In the Vikalp Sangam process we get such news occasionally, of bilateral or multilateral linkages made at the Sangam confluences or online, resulting in some wonderful collaborations and actions, and it then all seems worth the constant emailing, phoning, and following up! :)
It would be great to get one or more of the students to write about this experience, which we can carry on vikalp sangam website .. and perhaps they can also publish in one of the youth magazines? And/or you writing about it ... with a bit more elaboration on what they tried, how they were transformed etc ?

Dear PeDAGoG Members,

Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring,
It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up. These students are in the age group of 22-27 years. Kia ora PeDaGoGs I came across the comment by Raymond de Young on seminar methods on Chris Smaje's Small Farm Future blog. I looked up de Young (info in italics below) and the Kahn paper he refers to. It all sounded like something which some of you could use - here's hoping. 😁 Christine /https://seas.umich.edu/research/faculty/raymond-de-young// / // /Associate Professor// //Behavior, Education, and Communication// //Climate + Energy// //Food Systems// //// //About// //// //Raymond De Young, PhD, is a broadly trained psychologist, planner, and engineer. He is an Associate Professor of Environmental Psychology and Planning at SEAS and in the Program in the Environment (PitE), and a Faculty Associate at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum and at the Graham Sustainability Institute. His research focus is on the process of re-localization, a response to emerging biophysical limits and the consequences of having deeply disrupted the Earth's ecosystems. De Young applies conservation and environmental psychology principles to the challenge of helping people to envision and adopt frugal behavioral responses that support a life lived well within local resource limits. Despite what for some people is a dismal forecast, his work is decidedly hopeful. He is described as neither an optimist nor pessimist when it comes to human behavior, but rather an idealist without illusions.// //// //His current work includes research on (1) helping people to pre-familiarize themselves with the behavioral aspects of the coming resource downshift, (2) motivating environmental stewardship using innate satisfactions and (3) using nature to restore the mental vitality needed for responding to and coping with the lean and difficult yet exciting times ahead.// /// https://smallfarmfuture.org.uk/?p=1958 Of climate crimes, community conflicts and carbon cowboys 6.6.22 Raymond De Young on June 8, 2022 at 01:42 said: On “…no small farm catch phrase.” I’ve been teaching a seminar on localization for 15 years with a colleague. Content of the initial class sessions evolved through several stages. Early years we had to argue hard for our stated premise of energy descent, later contended with questions about the ecomodernist counter-arguments, and more recently the privileging of DEI concepts before anything else can be considered (where your discussions of authenticity have greatly helped Chris). It was fascinating that an eco-anxiety slowly emerged over the first decade (and not just in our seminar but across our entire school of environment) and then unexpectedly, it completely went away, at least in our seminar. We were baffled about that, but finally realized we could ask the students why that happened. A few things came up (e.g., our inclusion of psychological well being in the readings, affirmative stories of small-scale localization efforts) but universally they credited a phrase we use and a technique that directs the focus of conversations on small steps, that can be taken now, but are about the future. The phrase we use is sometimes credited to perma-culture folks but I’ve also heard that it was used by a football coach: “Blame no one. Expect no help. Do something.” The emphasis is, of course, on that last part. And that’s what the students say their education has come to ignore. Now we’re a professional school so we do emphasize procedural knowledge. But even my school has moved more and more toward academic publications, conceptual frameworks (how I’ve come to hate that term), international/global thinking, etc. and away from grounded, practical, and smaller-scale efforts. The other thing we do is use “barn raising” to structure conversations. Kahn has discussed four basic types of seminars (Kahn, 1971)*: A. FREE-FOR-ALL: There is a prize out there in the middle of the floor. It may be the instructor’s approval or it may be one’s own self-esteem, but it’s there and the goal is to win it, and anything goes. You win by looking not just smart, but by looking smarter. And that means it’s just as important to make others look dumb as to make you look smart. The main tool is criticism of the readings and other member’s ideas. The academic critique mode fits well in this model. B. BEAUTY CONTEST: In this model I parade my idea to you seeking your admiration. Then it’s off the runway I go to get ready for my next appearance while you’re parading your idea. Of course, I’m not paying any attention to your ideas, nor you to mine. C. DISTINGUISHED HOUSE TOUR: In this model someone advances an idea. The rest of the seminar spends time exploring it, asking questions, uncovering inconsistencies, etc. When they have got a good grasp on it one of the other members offers another idea. It may be a whole different point of view on the same subject. The seminar members then explore that new idea. This is a high form of discourse and can produce good outcomes. However, while outright criticism is not used, neither are ideas compared, or built upon. D. BARN RAISING: In frontier North America when a family urgently needed a barn and had limited resources, their community gathered to help build the structure. The family described the idea, the kind of barn they needed, picked the site, etc. But it was the community that pitched in and actually built it. One student’s feedback really captured the process: “[The seminar] prompted intellectual curiosity by building a classroom environment that was founded on building UP each other’s thoughts, instead of on critiquing them and breaking them down. [The] course taught me the value in thinking ahead to how we’ll respond as a community to our changing world, and that in higher education, we need to think more about doing through action, and by starting small.” I know this is a long comment, and it may seem to be about congratulating myself for running a great seminar. But what I really mean to convey is how rare it is to find a place like this blog where “barn raising” is the social norm. And maybe to wonder if “Do something + Barn raising = Realistic optimism about the future.” --------------------------------------------------------------------- *The Seminar By Michael Kahn https://ibis.geog.ubc.ca/~ewyly/g552/Kahn(1971)

Blessings all, Melanie

Dear teachers and learners, it has been heartening to read about the success of Pallavi and her class in applying Melanie's 'method'. I have had similar experiences (as a part-time/temporary tertiary teacher) whenever I have dared to depart from the standard top-down methods of teaching and engage the students in more experiential types of learning. In these instances I have set up exercises and study topics where what happens in their daily lives is related practically to the curriculum being taught, and the students share what they are learning with each other. Students who have been used to getting by with doing the minimum the current system requires can indeed be sceptical and confused at the beginning if they have never done anything like this before (but those who dislike the current system usually take to it like ducks to water). Once they get the hang of it, most students respond really well, learn heaps more than they would from lectures, videos, etc., and become more enthusiastic about what they are studying. Plus if they are working in pairs and/or groups they develop relationships of mutual support, which to my mind is a key part of the 'hidden curriculum' for 'alternative' educators. Two really useful resources for educators new to this way of teaching and learning are George Lakey's 2010 book /Facilitating Group Learning/ and the website Training for Change, which was set up by Lakey and other 'direct education' practitioners. Links to a comprehensive review of the book and the website are below. Lakey and the Training for Change educators are mostly not working in an academic setting, but rather in the community, but in my view their methods are applicable wherever the educator wants the students to really engage with the material being taught, and with each other. I am sure there are lots more resources out there and look forward to hearing about them. 😁 nga mihi nui (warm greetings) Christine */Key Insights from George Lakey’s book, “Facilitating Group Learning”/** **Posted on December 17, 2010 ** * *https://daryncambridge.com/2010/12/17/key-insights-from-george-lakeys-book-f... * * * *https://www.trainingforchange.org/* On 29/05/22 03:45, Pallavi Varma Patil wrote:
Nice to see so many responses on this thread. Melanie and I can perhaps write our experience together and as Ashish suggests post it for wider audience.

Thanks for this fascinating discussion, Pallavi and Melanie - would you be willing to share details about this assignment? I'd be interested in trying it out with my students. Best, Vandana

Blessings all, Melanie

That's amazing and inspiring, Pallavi! And thanks Melanie! This is so much the essence of this kind of forum and network ... and it probably happens every once in a while but is not always reported back. In the Vikalp Sangam process we get such news occasionally, of bilateral or multilateral linkages made at the Sangam confluences or online, resulting in some wonderful collaborations and actions, and it then all seems worth the constant emailing, phoning, and following up! :)
It would be great to get one or more of the students to write about this experience, which we can carry on vikalp sangam website .. and perhaps they can also publish in one of the youth magazines? And/or you writing about it ... with a bit more elaboration on what they tried, how they were transformed etc ?
(I am copying in here also the GTA core team to let them know of this).

Dear PeDAGoG Members,
I wanted to share a recent interesting and meaningful experience that came about directly as a result of this network.
Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring,
It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up. These students are in the age group of 22-27 years. I wanted to publicly thank Melanie in this forum for this impromptu collaboration. Following our webinar was Dan Baron's fantastic session and a 3rd webinar in the series is on its way. I hope what is now set rolling continues and we do not stop soon.
