Dear Prof. Koizumi, Prof. Patnaik, and Prof. Behera,
this is with regard to IUAES's World Congress of Anthropology
2023, proposed to be hosted by Kalinga Institute of Social
Sciences (KISS) in Odisha, India.
I would like to draw your kind attention to the attached
petition urging you to dissociate from KISS, given its
regressive record and orientation towards adivasi education,
which disrespects the enormous wisdom and knowledge of these
communities, and imposes homogenous, mainstream ideas. The
petition gives further details of the seriously flawed and
dangerous approach that KISS takes towards education.
Additionally, it points to the ironic fact that this institution
is funded by mining companies including those whose activities
have threatened to displace adivasi populations from their
traditional homes, apart from causing immense ecological
devastation.
As you will notice, the petition has been endorsed by some of
India's most well-known and respected adivasi (and non-adivasi)
scholars, activists, and organisations, several civil society
and movement groups, as also a number of scholars and activists
from outside India who have worked closely with adivasi
communities in India.
We hope to receive your considered response to this petition,
thank you, sincerely,
Ashish
(Ashish Kothari)
(on behalf of the signatories to the petition)
