The original was at http://www.isd.mel.nist.gov/projects/emc/emcsoft.html which disappeared a number of years ago. A copy was added to the CVS repository at Sourceforge minus several images.. Like the README, it is woefully out of date and has been superceeded by the files found in the Documents directory of the CD. ... After much digging around in various archives, I've managed to locate many of the images referenced by emcsoft.html and uploaded the whole lot to a server. See http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org/emcsoft/ - Note: There are a number of broken links (mainly to NIST pages).. Regards, Paul.
Thanks, that was late last night. After poking around a little I realized it was pretty old. Nice job on the CD. I started the wiring of my X3 mill today. Hopefully all will go well. djs Paul wrote: Hi David On Wednesday 15 November 2006 03:06, David Szakovits wrote: the /usr/local/emc/README file says that emc/doc/emcsoft.html describes how to modify the .ini file. sorry if i am a little slow, but where do i find this file. hi, after looking over the documentation on the cd. i am still a little confused or disoriented and the task seems nearly impossible. starting with the setup for the sherline mill maybe it is not so bad. i am using new gecko 201s and new motors from [1]www.homeshopcnc.com 260oz-in motors for x and y and the 500 oz-in motor on the z-axis. standard leadscrews for now. i know i will have to dig through most of the documentation eventually, but it would be motivating to have enough confidence and knowledge to safely send power to the motors. if i start with the sherline software that appears on the bdi desktop, what files, variables and documentation should i concentrate on first. djs Paul wrote: Hi David On Wednesday 15 November 2006 03:06, David Szakovits wrote: the /usr/local/emc/README file says that emc/doc/emcsoft.html describes how to modify the .ini file. sorry if i am a little slow, but where do i find this file. Agreed, the documentation could be improved, but it is unlikely to get overhauled any time soon..

Using a config that is known to work as a starting point is probably best. The /usr/local/emc/mill_inch_freq.ini is as good a choice as any with the added advantage of being linked to a desktop icon. The first set of parameters that will need changing will be OUTPUT_SCALE and INPUT_SCALE to match the stepper motors & feedscrews. Assuming a 1:1 gearing, no step multipliers in the Gecko drives, and standard 200 steps/rev motors, the correct number would be: TPI * 200 Once the scales have been set, you can play around with the velocity and acceleration parameters - A general rule of thumb here is the max velocity can be found by taking 1/([EMCMOT]PERIOD * OUTPUT_SCALE) divide by five so that you don't trigger following errors at high speed.. Once you have found the maximum accelerations and velocities, turn them down to the lowest values that are acceptable - You are tuning for longevity not the fastest way to wear out a machine. If you wish to sidestep tuning of PID parameters, change the EMCMOT driver from freqmod to quickstep. Regards, Paul.
