Question regarding compiling EMC BDI-4.38
Hello, Thank you all for helping me on my last question. I have made the compiling as you have recommended: cd emc2/src ./configure -enable-run-in-place Make Sudo make install Is it normal to take almost 2 hours to compile the complete package on Duron 700MHz? There were also a lot of warnings during compiling. When the compiling was finished I have made: scripts/emc and the emc2 responded: Can't find bWidget 1.7 package. There is a debian bwidget package; install it with sudo apt-get install bwidget. This was a problem for me because I have no means to connect my computer which linux is instaled on to internet. So I have copied the complete BWidged-1.7.0 directory to /usr/lib/. When I start (scripts/emc) at the beginning was no problem. But when I made the selection from the menu the output was: localhost:/usr/local/emc2/emc2-testing# scripts/emc EMC2 - TESTING-2006-03-02 Machine configuration directory is '/usr/local/emc2/emc2-testing/configs/stepper/' Machine configuration file is 'stepper_mm.ini' Starting emc... insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/kernel/adeos/adeos.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_hal.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_up.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_fifos.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_shm.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_sem.ko': -1 File exists insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/rtai/rtai_math.ko': -1 File exists insmod: can't read '/usr/local/emc2/emc2-testing/rtlib/rtapi.ko': No such file or directory insmod: can't read '/usr/local/emc2/emc2-testing/rtlib/hal_lib.ko': No such file or directory ERROR: Could not load 'rtapi' ERROR: Could not load 'hal_lib' Realtime system did not load Shutting down and cleaning up EMC... A few minutes, even on a Celeron 433MHz, is all it should take. Any longer than five minutes, and there is something seriously wrong.

Oh great, a package to add to the list for BDI-4.40, fortunately, not a huge package, but 200K that could have been used for something else...

emc2 is, at best, experimental and a long way from being stable enough to use in a production environment (despite what some of the developers might say). All I can do is provide the packages required to compile and run emc2, occasionally checking to see that it _will_ compile.. Beyond that, bugs, crashes, and other nasties, I'll have to point you to http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=6744&atid=106744 and suggest filing a bug report with as much detail as possible - Don't be afraid to paste the entire output of dmesg, it just might provide some clue as to what went wrong. On a 300MHz Pentium II laptop running Ubuntu, it takes somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes to completely build emc2 and axis. Based on these 'insmod' errors and the report that it took ages to compile emc2, I believe that you may have had emc or emc2 already running, or else the "realtime" modules failed to unload when you quit emc earlier. When realtime is running, especially when PERIOD has been turned to the tiniest value that doesn't crash the system, there's very little time left for regular Linux programs to run. If that's true, emc2 may run for you after a reboot. If not, you may find additional advice on compiling emc2 over on the emc-users mailing list. http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users Jeff
