Hi Gene, I'll answer this because it's a question specifically about EMC2. After doing a cvs update, you need to always do a full recompile. If you are building for run-in-place, this involves cd src ./configure --enable-run-in-place make clean make sudo make setuid cd .. scripts/emc EMC2 has had all its security and permissions issues cleaned up and you should never run it as root. You should also never run cvs as root. Using root when it's not necessary just leads to other problems down the road - specifically, ending up with root-owned files strewn about. If you continue to have problems building EMC2, please visit the #emc channel on freenode, or bring the topic to the emc-developers list on sourceforge. Regards, Chris

I reverted with a -A command, and then re-issured the up -rTESTING thing as root. So I'll got change overships before I do anything else. And I'll print this & take it out there since its nice today and I'm actually out there.

Ok, I've done this as user gene, after making the whole tree mine, from the cvs up -rTESTING to the scripts/emc stage, even logging out of X and logging in as gene & restarting x. I get this: -------------- gene@shop:~/emc2$ scripts/emc EMC2 - TESTING-2006-02-14 Machine configuration directory is '/home/gene/emc2/configs/stepper/' Machine configuration file is 'stepper_inch.ini' Starting emc... insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/kernel/adeos/adeos.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_hal.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_up.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_fifos.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_shm.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_sem.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.6-magma/rtai/rtai_math.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/home/gene/emc2/rtlib/rtapi.ko': -1 Operation not permitted insmod: error inserting '/home/gene/emc2/rtlib/hal_lib.ko': -1 Operation not permitted ERROR: Could not load 'rtapi' ERROR: Could not load 'hal_lib' Realtime system did not load Shutting down and cleaning up EMC... Cleanup done gene@shop:~/emc2$ --------------- I'd get on irc from out there, but that part of mozilla refuses to install due to mplayer dependencies, and for some reason when I tried to install IRC-II, it downloaded zero bytes. So theres not an irc agent on that box that I know of. And an sudo scripts/emc is greeted by even nastier refusals. I also had to install bwidget.

Ok, should I just blow that tree away after saving the stepper_inch.ini I've been useing and just start from scratch?

I'm on it I think, I'll add that address to the post.

The emc2 makefile contains a nasty fork bomb that will take your system down if you trigger it correctly. Also, if you must do a "make install", make sure you have run configure with --prefix=/tmp lest you install over the top of one of the existing EMC libraries. The install target could very well trash your working EMC install, and that emc2.deb will most certainly break a BDI-4 system. If you've had a problem with the Makefile, a detailed bug report would be appreciated. Nobody else has reported a problem.

I do not recommend make install on BDI; run-in-place is available for running EMC2 CVS on systems with existing EMC (including EMC2) installations.
and that emc2.deb will most certainly break a BDI-4 system.
Thanks for mentioning that, Paul, the deb packages the EMC2 team are building regularly from the EMC2 CVS have not been tested on BDI and are not meant for use on BDI. They are meant to make EMC2 installation and updating easy on Ubuntu 5.10. Preliminary details, for those interested, at http://timeguy.com/cradek/emc/ubuntu Regards, Chris

Or I could fix it in CVS myself, unless some %$&@ has revoked my commit access..

In which case, the "emc2 Team" needs to ensure the install target is safe on ALL systems before making a release tarball - Or make the default install tree /dev/null

The emc2.deb will also break Ubuntu installs, may be not tomorrow, or next week, but before too long, it will break. Nothing major to start with, just a few files will get trashed, maybe a conflict or two after an update. With any luck, the --fix-broken flag with apt-get will resolve the problems.. So, with a "make install" not recommended, a borked set of rules, and a number of as yet, unresolved bugs, I guess we won't be seeing an emc2.deb for BDI-4 any time soon. Is this true? I still see "paul_c" listed as a project member on the page http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=6744 Jeff PS I'm still scratching my head over the 'fork bomb', and I would appreciate your help in locating and fixing it, since I've put some work into the makefiles recently.

I've not done a 'make install' yet, ever. OTOH, I've not spent any time with the emc thats on bdi-4.30 either, so its exactly as installed I'd assume.
