Peter: I'd start at this link: <http://www.cncgear.com/EMC/BDI/> and
download and burn the BDI-4.38.iso you can see there. Lots of build
problems are bypassed by having a fully working emc install that you
only need to configure for your hardware and then run it.
There is also a wiki link off linuxcnc.org with a page detailing howto
download, build, and use the emc2 tree from a cvs pulldown. This is
however the development branch, and may not build on any given evening,
so I do a new pull & build about weekly. This is a much more capable
(IMO) version of emc with a few gnarly places here and there, but the
development pace is fairly feverish. I'd make a swag that it will be
ready for all to beat on before very much longer. Given warmer weather
since my shop isn't heated, I'd be carving parts with emc2 right now.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules. I do use spamassassin too. :-)
